The refugee wave post-August 2017 has changed his business model Previously he had to row over the River Naf which divides the Burmese countryside from Bangladesh Women and children at Balukhali camp All photos courtesy the writer “(Previously) One boat from Myanmar and one from Bangladesh would meet in the middle of the river We’d give them Taka and they would give us Yaba” he explains But now Harun doesn’t need to go to the river he can buy Yaba from the refugee camps "At the time of last year’s influx the Yaba trade increased The refugees brought Yaba with them and sold it to us at cheaper rates” he says It’s a profitable business for the lanky Bangladeshi teen He dropped out of school after finishing Class Eight and worked as a salesman and security guard in Malaysia for three years before returning home and peddling drugs at Cox’s Bazar “If I buy Yaba for 45 Taka in Teknaf I can sell it for 55 Taka; in Cox’s Bazar it’s 80 Taka; in Chittagong it’s 120 Taka And in Dhaka I could sell it for 180 Taka” he says The further the Yaba goes the more Harun earns Yaba is available in various qualities — R7 is considered the best and purest type of Yaba “In Dhaka one pill of R7 brought Yaba you have to pay something’ If the trader is big and the quantity of Yaba (he’s dealing in) is large then the police take between 50000-1 lakh Taka Smaller businessmen pay around 5000 to election in the state Representational Image PTI Toughening of stand by the Sena at a time when the Devendra Fadnavis government is on the backfoot due to farmers’ protests assumes significance amid reports that the BJP is weighing its options vis-a-vis an early Assembly election The BJP-led NDA government was formed in the state in October 2014 Though the chief minister had announced a loan waiver for the small and marginal farmers amid a farmers’ protest the Sena had been insisting on a "complete farm loan waiver" Sena MP Sanjay Raut told a Marathi news channel on Friday that the party will not be affected if it relinquished power "We will not lose anything and it will not affect us even if we relinquish power We are better prepared than the BJP in case of a mid-term election If the government wishes to avoid it it should immediately announce a complete farm loan waiver" he said Asserting that the Sena would withdraw from the government "in no time" if it wanted to Raut asked the BJP to clearly state that the Uddhav Thackeray-led party’s stand on various issues was indeed "causing anguish" within the saffron party "Take it as our warning Announce a complete (farm) loan waiver or we will not take much time to throttle the government" he said The Rajya Sabha member accused Fadnavis of playing "dirty politics" over the issue of farm loan waiver "It is the chief minister who created a rift between (Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana chief) Raju Shetti and (Minister of state for Agriculture) Sadabhau Khot" he alleged Referring to Fadnavis’ statement that the government will withdraw the cases only against the protesting farmers and not the others Raut asked "Can a worker of a political party also not be a farmer" Replying to a query on the upcoming presidential polls the Sena MP said his party had no intention of putting pressure on the BJP when the latter proposed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s name for the country’s top constitutional post Referring to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar’s "reluctance" to throw his hat in the ring for the presidential polls Raut said "Pawar does not seem to have agreed on the proposal but if he files nomination we will see" Minister of Information Lai Mohammed has stated that the Buhari government had spent N13 trillion on infrastructural projects nationwide since 2016 He said this in his speech on Monday at the commissioning of the channelization de-listing flood control and development of Okiki and Ogbagba Rivers in Osun state Mohammed said governance is about the people hence the ongoing massive investments across the country in projects that are of direct benefit to the citizens including roads rail power and other infrastructural programmes He added: “The Federal Government will continue to execute projects that will benefit the people across the country’s six geo-political zones and this has been attested to by the ongoing massive infrastructural projects been carried out across the country “Between 2016 and today the Buhari Administration has spent over 13 trillion Naira on infrastructural projects This is bound to attract the kind of investment that will trigger growth in critical sectors like agriculture solid minerals and tourism thus moving the economy away from oil “This is why the Administration’s fight against corruption is very critical in that it will free the much-needed resources for national development Every kobo that is not looted is a plus for development “But for the massive looting of the national treasury most of the projects we are executing today including those that have been abandoned for years would have been completed” With tariffs in place on steel and aluminum from US allies since early June and threats of retaliatory tariffs from Canada in July the North Dakota Trade Office said it already has noticed a 15 to 20 percent increase on base prices for steel and aluminumNorth Dakota manufacturers who rely on these metals know they’re already paying more but they’re less certain what price hikes will eventually mean for business and consumersLee Holschuh president of Mid-America Steel with offices in Fargo and Bismarck said it "literally changes overnight" He’s noticed steel prices fluctuating since the beginning of the year when tariff talk started leaking into the news"Uncertainty in the marketplace is never a good thing for any product line" he added It’s especially poor for regional steel and aluminum manufacturers who often sell parts made-to-order Dave Young president of Young Manufacturing Inc in Grand Forks said he could give a customer a quote for an item one day but when the customer needs the item three weeks later the material could cost more"We might have to eat the difference or go back to the customer" Young saidSimon Wilson executive director of the NDTO said some of the businesses his office represents have expressed a similar message of uncertainty Of course not every manufacturer fares the same"It depends on where they’re at in their business cycle and who they import from" Wilson said "There’s some that are in it really deep and their prices have increased"The most Wilson said he can do for manufacturers is explain what’s going on"A lot of it’s just information—trying to keep up with the information that’s out there and trying to keep information accurate"Misinformation in the news and in conversation also lends to the market’s uncertainty right now according to Wilson who said he works as hard as he can to provide the most accurate and recent information because he knows that’s what manufacturers are basing their prices onThe NDTO takes its support a step further by collecting concerns from manufacturers and bringing them to the attention of their elected officials"It’s very confidential a lot of times" Wilson said of what businesses tell himManufacturers are weary when it comes to discussing their uncertainties because they don’t want to discourage customers or provide leverage for competitors However Wilson said legislators need to know what’s going on to make a change The best solution he said would be slowing things down and having a candid discussion on real ways the United States can improve trade Wilson said the country needs to "get the right people from different countries to sit around and hammer out some solutions""We’re all about fair trade" Wilson said of the NDTO "and fair trade isn’t all these tariffs It’s letting North Dakota businesses compete on a level playing field"North Dakota legislators have taken state trade concerns to Congress Wednesday Sen John Hoeven R-ND.
