Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, on a speaking tour on behalf of his environmental organization, appealed today to Los Angeles leaders to join in his call for an international conference to address issues as varied as global warming and clean water. “Billions of people are threatened by not having quality water,” Gorbachev said through a translator after a meeting with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “It should be the right of every citizen to have a guarantee of clean, safe water.” Villaraigosa and City Council President Eric Garcetti said Gorbachev and the organization he founded, Global Green, have helped the city as it seeks to improve its environment. “I have visited Los Angeles on many occasions and it is a great city that is making a significant contribution,” Gorbachev said. The former Soviet leader also won support from the council in asking the G-8 nations to establish an international panel to look at environmental issues and take steps to reduce greenhouse gases. Villaraigosa told Gorbachev that he is pushing a broad agenda to make the city more environmentally friendly. Among his plans are planting a million trees, converting the city’s vehicle fleet to alternative fuels, restoring the Los Angeles River, reducing landfill use while promoting recycling and greater use of renewable energy. Garcetti also praised Gorbachev for reaching out to local leaders. “Only together can we make a difference, one city at a time,” Garcetti said. Aides to Gorbachev said he has several appearances planned on the West Coast to speak on international matters as well as environmental issues. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
