President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the South Africa delegation to the 11th BRICS Summit to be held in Brasilia, Brazil from 13 – 14 November 2019.BRICS is an association of five major emerging countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa-, which together represent about 42% of the global population, 23% of GDP, 30% of the territory and 18% of the global trade. The 11th BRICS Summit is hosted by the Federative Republic of Brazil, as led by President Jair Messias Bolsonaro, as the 2019 BRICS Chair and is convened under the theme “BRICS: Economic Growth for an Innovative Future.”Brazil’s priorities for its 2019 BRICS Chairship are innovation, fighting transnational crime, health and promoting trade and investment with a focus on infrastructure development and possible Public Private Partnerships. The Summit will be preceded by the BRICS Business Forum where President Ramaphosa and other BRICS Leaders will interact with the BRICS Business Council to strengthen dialogue between the BRICS Business Council and BRICS leaders to strengthen and promote economic, trade, business and investment ties amongst the BRICS members.South Africa’s membership of BRICS enables the country to employ additional and powerful tools in its fight to address the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality through increased trade, investment, tourism, capacity building, skills and technology transfers. These objectives are further realised through BRICS’ Financial Institutions like the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Africa Regional Centre (ARC). The Johannesburg-based ARC, notably, is playing a catalytic role in providing financial and project preparation support for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in South Africa and Africa. At an Institutional Development level, South Africa derives crucial benefits through the Track II institutions such as the BRICS Business Council and the BRICS Think-Tank Council, as well as the creation of the BRICS Inter-Bank Cooperation Mechanism. Furthermore, the establishment in 2016 of the BRICS STI (Science, Technology & Innovation) funding mechanism and Framework Programme, is an example of the vital support for capacity building, as well as skills and technology transfer. The objective of the President’s engagement in the BRICS Summit is to contribute to the future direction of BRICS, to strengthen intra-BRICS relations and mutually beneficial cooperation across the four pillars of cooperation, particularly in intra-BRICS trade and investment, as well as to ensure the ongoing implementation of the outcomes of the 10th BRICS Summit hosted in South Africa in 2018.The Summit will welcome the adoption of the Terms of Reference and Work Plan for the Advisory Group on the BRICS Partnership on the New Industrial Revolution (PartNIR), which is in line with South Africa’s theme of the BRICS Chairship in 2018, namely “BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution”.South Africa has made concerted efforts to place the African Continent and the Global South on the agenda of BRICS and to harmonise policies adopted in regional and international fora with those pursued in BRICS, i.e. Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The exponential institutional development of BRICS has yielded institutions, including the New Development Bank (NDB), and its’ Africa Regional Centre (ARC) and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), amongst others, all of which are intended to make tangible and impactful contributions toward the development objectives of South Africa and BRICS.President Ramaphosa will utilize the opportunity to highlight to BRICS partners South Africa’s priorities for chairing the African Union (AU) in 2020 and the commencement of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area.President Ramaphosa will be accompanied by the First Lady of the Republic of South Africa, Dr Tshepo Motsepe, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Dr Naledi Pandor, Minister of Finance, Mr Tito Mboweni, Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Health, Dr Zwelini Mkhize and Minister of State Security, Ms Ayanda Dlodlo.Due to simultaneous working visits out of the country by the President and the Deputy President, President Ramaphosa has in terms of Section 90(1)(b) of the Constitution designated Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, to serve as Acting President from Tuesday 12 November to Friday 15 November 2019.Media enquiries: Khusela Diko: Spokesperson to the President – 072 854 5707ISSUED BY THE PRESIDENCY OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

The move, though not earth shattering in its own right, highlights the continual shift of Twitter away from being a communication tool to that of an information hub. The announcement highlights a number of partnerships with location-based services like Gowalla, Localeze, OpenTable and TomTom, among others, that Twitter developer advocate Matt Harris says will “serve as a foundation for a number of exciting features we have planned to help users find what’s new in their area and around the world.”Twitter began offering the ability to tag Tweets with specific places last June, including Gowalla and Foursquare integration, but until now developers had to search for tweets in relation to places according to the correct service, not the place itself. Now, according to the documentation, Twitter supports both Twitter place IDs and IDs from partner providers. In this week’s announcement, Harris writes: To make it easy for you to use the large data set, we’re using an index that combines the IDs across different partners into one. This means you can use the IDs from your preferred partner’s dataset when using Twitter Search to find Tweets about a specific place. In this way, Twitter can act as a connector of services – a one-stop shop for place data. You can check in with Gowalla and then have that place data easily accessible for use with another service as if you had checked in with Twitter itself. By making its database of places relational, Twitter is positioning itself in much the same way Facebook has with its Places product.Mick Johnson, co-founder of Whereoscope, told us that he saw this as a move to help attract developers.“Twitter is fighting the place database battle by giving app developers a ‘zero-cost’ way to adopt,” said Johnson. “If you’re Gowalla, you get all of Twitter’s data while retaining the option to switch out, because you’re still using the same ID. Conversely if you want to integrate with Facebook, you don’t have a way out afterwards.”Basically, Twitter is doing the work of relating different places on its service, so location services don’t have to commit to using its places IDs and risk alienating itself with other services. Currently, Twitter has announced partnerships with 13 companies, giving developers the ability to search by their place IDs in addition to Twitter’s own IDs.Will a move like this be enough for developers of location-based services? Or will the sheer size and breadth of Facebook’s social graph overpower any ease-of-adoption on Twitter’s end? Let us know what you think in the comments.

No moving parts, nothing to wear outThe beauty of drainline heat exchangers is that there are no moving parts, nothing the wear out, and nothing to get clogged. Only fresh water goes through the small-diameter supply pipes; any hair or other materials pass through a standard, smooth drain pipe. Several versionsThere are four manufacturers of drainline heat exchangers that I’m aware of: Vasile’s original company, WaterFilm Energy of Medford, New York, and three Canadian companies: EcoInnovation Technologies of St-Louis-de-Gonzague, Quebec, which makes the Eco-GFX; ReTherm Energy Systems of Summerside, Prince Edward Island; and RenewAbility Energy of Kitchener, Ontario, which makes the Power-Pipe.Most of these have a single 1/2-inch copper pipe coiled around a length (typically three to five feet) of 2-inch or 3-inch diameter drain pipe. The Power-Pipe is a little different than the others. It has a header that splits the supply pipe into four smaller, square-cross-section pipes that provide more surface area for heat transfer. Most of these manufacturers offer various lengths and diameters of drainline and can accommodate different supply pipe diameters. GBA Encyclopedia: Drain-water heat recoveryGBA Product Guide: Domestic Water Heat ReclaimersQ&A: Plumbing question – Domestic Water Heat Reclaimer CostInstalled in a new home, drainline heat exchangers typically cost $500 to $800 (including installation). Costs in multifamily buildings should be lower. In some states there are rebates available for such systems. How a drainline heat exchanger worksThe process is pretty simple. A special section of copper drainpipe is installed beneath a shower (typically the largest hot water use in a home) or other hot wastewater source. This section of drainpipe has smaller-diameter copper piping wrapped tightly around it. The cold-water supply pipe leading into the water heater is diverted so that it flows through the small-diameter copper pipe. RELATED ARTICLES When hot water is being pulled from the water heater to supply the shower, the water going into the water heater is preheated by the wastewater going down the shower drain. If it’s a tankless — rather than storage — water heater, the incoming water temperature will be higher, so less energy will be required to get it up to the needed delivery temperature — thus saving energy (though the tankless water heater has to be thermostatically controlled and, thus, able to deal with inlet water of varying temperature). The man who invented the drainwater heater exchanger, Carmine Vasile, called the product a GFX, for “gravity-film exchange,” recognizing that water going down a vertical pipe forms a film that clings to the inner walls of the pipe where the heat can effectively be transferred through the copper to the supply water. Over the past few weeks I’ve written about various strategies to produce hot water efficiently. We’ve seen that tankless water heaters are more efficient than storage water heaters (though are not without their drawbacks), and we’ve learned that heat-pump water heaters produce two to three times as much heat per unit of electricity consumed as electric water heaters that rely on electric resistance heat. But the unfortunate reality is that even with the most efficient methods of generating hot water, we still lose the vast majority of that heat down the drain. Domestic hot water is a once-through product. I’ve seen estimates that 90% of the heat in hot water is lost down the drain. Dan Cautley, an energy engineer with the Energy Center of Wisconsin, says that drain water “may be one of our largest untapped resources.”It turns out that we can do something about that. In the right application, drainline heat exchangers allow a significant portion of the heat from hot water going down the drain to be recovered. Maximizing recovery efficiencyAccording to an article in Environmental Building News, heat recovery efficiency can be as high as 60% — which can effectively double the water heating efficiency. Just how much benefit a drainline heat exchanger will provide will depend on usage patterns and how the plumbing in a house is configured. For the highest rate of heat recovery, it is ideal if all household members use the same shower (or have several showers that drain through the same vertical length of drainline). It helps if the water heater is in a basement (or beneath the showers and close by, so that there is minimal length of supply piping from the heat exchanger to the water heater). These systems are even more cost-effective in schools and commercial buildings that use a lot of hot water: school shower facilities, health clubs, laundromats, commercial kitchens, etc.
CC Flickr Picnic food by Mark H. Anbinderby Joanna ManeroAlthough the summer is winding down and coming to an end, Labor Day is always a nice last hoorah. It’s the perfect time to squeeze in one last picnic or trip to the lake or beach with the family. Before embarking on the family fun, check out these picnic tips to make sure everyone enjoys their break without too many trips to the bathroom. Don’t forget your food safety!Keep your hands clean– It can be tricky to wash your hands in an outdoor setting. If facilities aren’t available, plan ahead and bring hand wipes or sanitizer to use before handling food.Keep cool things cool– If you have cold items, like potato salad or condiments, keep them in the cooler. Keep the cooler in a shaded area and try to limit excessively opening the cooler to maintain cold temperature. Keep ice packs or ice cubes in the cooler and everything in an air tight container to avoid cooler water from getting in the food.Don’t over-pack– Try to bring only the food you think you and your family will eat. Don’t overpack food, to avoid dealing with leftovers.Leftovers– If you happen to have leftovers, place them in sealed containers and stick them in a cooler to avoid leaving them in the temperature danger zone, the temperature range in which bacteria grow most rapidly, for too long.Save condiment packages– If you can, save a few small condiment packages from fast food restaurants or cafes to stick in your picnic basket. It’ll take up less room and will be easier to share.Reverse pack your basket– Pack food items on the bottom of the basket with paper plates, silverware, and a tablecloth on top. This way you will have a place to put your food when you get to it.GrillingMarinate– Make sure you marinate your food in the fridge and not on the counter at room temperature. Don’t reuse marinade as sauce to pour over meat. You can separate part of the marinade before using it on raw meat to pour over the finished meat later.Keep raw meat items separate– If you can, assign them their own cooler to keep food from cross-contamination. If not, double bag meat items in air tight containers.Always cook food thoroughly– If you are doing any grilling, make sure food is cooked all the way through. Although a meat thermometer is unlikely, cut the thickest piece of meat to evaluate if it is cooked thoroughly.Avoid cross-contamination– Make sure you have different utensils for cooked and raw products.I hope you found some of these tips fun and useful as you prepare for your last few family outings for the summer. Don’t forget the sunscreen and bug spray! Most importantly, make the most of the summer before the kids go back to school.Check out the following websites for more tips and tricks for the perfect picnic! https://www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsafety/content/picnic-safetyhttps://www.fda.gov/food/resourcesforyou/Consumers/ucm109899.htmhttps://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/seasonal-recipes/how-to-plan-the-perfect-picnic This blog was posted by Robin Allen, a member of the Military Families Learning Network (MFLN) Nutrition and Wellness team that aims to support the development of professionals working with military families.
