Cuban triple jumper Pedro Pablo Pichardo switches to Portugal

first_imgOne of the Caribbean’s best triple jumpers has switched allegiance and will now represent Portugal. Cuba-born Pedro Pablo Pichardo, the two-time world triple-jump silver medalist, has obtained Portuguese nationality. The 24-year-old triple jumper, who left Cuba in April, made the announcement on Thursday.Despite the switch, Pichardo will be unable to compete for Portugal at the upcoming European championships, world championships or the Olympics until the IAAF lifts its freeze on changes of national representation. The matter is to be discussed by the world governing body in March 2018.“It’s up to the international federation to take the decisions it deems appropriate,” said Pichardo Thursday from Lisbon where he now competes for Benfica’s athletics club. “The bottom line is that I’m available to represent my country, which is now Portugal.”The former world junior champion is one of only five triple jumpers to leap beyond 18 meters and is seen as a major threat to the dominance of American star, Christian Taylor.Pichardo, who has a personal best of 18.08 meters, won silver medals at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships in Moscow and Beijing, respectively.last_img read more

Caribbean Islands Warned To Be Prepared As Major Earthquakes Hit Puerto…

first_imgPORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Tuesday said that the recent earthquakes in Puerto Rico should serve as a reminder to the Caribbean “that our region is seismically active and we always need to be prepared.”On Monday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 rocked Puerto Rico and it was followed by another quake with a magnitude of 6.4 on Tuesday. The centre said that Monday’s quake was a “foreshock” to the 6.4 quake on Tuesday.A foreshock is an earthquake that occurs before a larger seismic event.US officials said power outages and damage have been reported near the island’s southern coast including in the city of Ponce where a 77-year-old man was killed and at least eight others injured. The US Geological Survey said the quake also affected several other countries including the Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Saint Martin, Sint Maarten, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, Turks and Caicos Islands and the US Virgin Islands. In recent days, several Caribbean countries have been rocked by earthquakes ranging in magnitudes from 3.9 to 4.3.“The recent earthquakes around Puerto Rico serves as a reminder that our region is seismically active and we always need to be prepared,” the centre said, adding that “although we do not monitor that area, sharing of knowledge is key to better understanding and living with these geological hazards.”last_img read more

French Ligue 1 Focus: For Olympique Lyon It’s An All Too Familiar Path

first_imgSeven-time French Ligue 1 champions, Olympique Lyon, appear to be on an all too familiar path to rebuilding, following summer activities which have seen Les Gones sanction the sale of majority of their key first-team players.Prolific forward Alexandre Lacazette, was sold for a club record £52.7million to Arsenal, diminutive attacking midfielder Mathieu Valbuena was also allowed to join Fenerbahce, Corentin Tolisso moved to Bayern Munich, while long-serving captain and midfield enforcer Maxime Gonalons left in the final year of his contract for a reported £5milion, joining AS Roma.Coach Bruno Genesio certainly wouldn’t lose any sleep, considering Lyon’s age long history of selling their best players and effortlessly replacing them. When erstwhile poster boy, Karim Benzema was sold to Real Madrid in 2009, the club wasted no time in replacing the prolific striker, recruiting two equally deadly centre forwards- Lisandro Lopez and Bafetimbi Gomis. The expected sale of Lacazette has seen the club swing into action, signing the duo of Bertrand Traore and Mariano, from Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively. Both forwards do not match the pedigree and scoring rate of the now-departed Lacazette, but it is hoped they will measure up to standard and improve a club who finished 4th last season in Ligue 1.They appear to be covered in attack following the sale of Lacazette and Valbuena. Maxwell Cornet, who expectedly lost his place in the line-up following the winter arrival of Memphis Depay last season, should earn one of two slots wide, while Depay could potentially enjoy a defining full-debut season occupying the other wide position.Genesio, as a matter of urgency has to recruit smartly and swiftly in midfield, to make up for the loss of Gonalons and Tolisso, to complement the efforts of Clement Grenier, Sergi Darder and Nabil Fekir. In a season where their chief competitors, AS Monaco, PSG, Olympique Marseille are all gearing up for one of the most competitive seasons in French League history, Lyon shouldn’t be left behind themselves as they line-up in a now famed 4-3-3 formation, upon which the glory days were built on.RelatedAlexander Lacazette: Turning Point For Arsenal?August 3, 2017In “England”Alassane Plea Joins Gladbach From NiceJuly 13, 2018In “Europe”Ligue 1 Review: PSG Stretch Lead With Nice Win As Lyon Edge Battle Of The OlympiquesMarch 19, 2018In “Europe”last_img read more

SBC’s On The Ball – La Liga continues quest for US expansion

first_img Codere avoids total collapse with 12-month credit line  June 22, 2020 Submit Share Share StumbleUpon After a frantic start to the club season, we head into an international break for the inaugural round of fixtures from the much-maligned UEFA Nations League. This edition of On The Ball looks at potential rule changes to the Premier League, as well as some significant progression to La Liga’s US expansion. Catalan Derby in Miami? After protests from both players and fans, it seems that La Liga has decided to take Barcelona’s away game to Girona to Miami as the first step of its US marketing expansion plans. The news comes after the League agreed a 15 year deal with the US media company Relevant, to host a minimum of one La Liga game in the States each campaign. Girona have confirmed that the club is working with La Liga for the January tie to be played in Miami, with it being reported that the club will offer 1,500 free flights for Girona season ticket holders wishing to travel to the States to attend. However, those not wishing to attend will be reimbursed 20% of the price they paid for their season ticket. That being said, putting the plans in place cold still hold a variety of complications, with many questioning La Liga’s decision to make the inaugural game in the US, one between two Catalan clubs. The event would of course be seen as something of a ceremony of Spanish football and Spanish culture, something that may cause agitation and unrest amongst Catalonian Barcelona and Girona fans. La Liga would need to get FIFA’s go ahead for the plans something that may not be straightforward, given football’s governing body rejected the Premier League’s previous proposals for a 39th game to be hosted abroad. Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde also questioned the decision to play a league game abroad at a recent press conference: “It sounds strange to me to play a domestic league game abroad,” Valverde told reporters.“But by the same token, it also sounded weird to play the Spanish Super Cup abroad and we did that…maybe some day the Moroccan Super Cup will be in Spain, but that will still be strange.“That being said, football has already crossed borders as a sport, becoming something else…we will see what happens, because as for now this is just an idea.”Premier League to get the VAR treatmentThe English Premier League is set to trial Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in 15 matches after the international break, with a view to fully integrating the technology next season.  Domestically, the technology has already been trialled in the FA Cup and the League Cup, however, the first time it will make its Premier League debut after the international break. It was also used at the World Cup in Russia, where it received largely positive reviews.   The end of the away goals rule? At a meeting of some of World Football’s most highly regarded club coaches, UEFA has been urged to review the away goals rule in major club competitions. The managers in attendance at the UEFA Elite Club Coaches Forum, were Jose Mourinho, Massimiliano Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Unai Emery, Paulo Fonseca, Julen Lopetegui, Thomas Tuchel and Arsène Wenger.Commenting on the potential of disbanding the rule, UEFA deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti told those in attendance: “The coaches think that scoring goals away is not as difficult as it was in the past… so they think the rule should be reviewed and that’s what we will do,” Marchetti told reporters.“They consider the situation in football has changed and the weight of the away goals is not the same as many years ago when the rule was introduced.”Inter Miami  Former England captain, David Beckham has confirmed his Miami football team will be called, Club Internacional de Futbol Miami – or Inter Miami CF.Inter Miami will enter the league in 2020, after gaining the approval of  MLS commissioner Don Garber. English football icon Beckham emphasised: “This is such a proud day for myself and for the entire team.”Managing owner Jorge Mas added: “Our city and our fans draw their strength from the dreams of a global population that calls Miami home. It is only fitting that our name pays tribute to the inclusiveness that makes us who we are.”Man United go mobile Manchester United and HCL Technologies, the Club’s Official Digital Transformation Partner, have reached another milestone in transforming the club’s digital offering to its 659 million global followers, by launching the Manchester United Official app on iOS and Android.Following on from the successful launch of the club’s new website, manutd.com, and making MUTV available to be streamed via the internet, United supporters can now look forward to a comprehensive fan experience via the club’s official mobile application.Manchester United’s Group Managing Director, Richard Arnold, commented: “This app will allow our 659 million Manchester United followers to easily connect to the club they love, wherever they are in the world.
