Zuma condemns strike violence

first_img12 October 2012President Jacob Zuma has spoken out against the violence that has characterised recent industrial action in the country, saying that striking workers should use existing channels to address their grievances within the law, and that violence could not be tolerated.Speaking at at a Black Business Council breakfast hosted by the New Age newspaper and the SABC in Midrand, Johannesburg on Thursday, Zuma said the government could not allow the recent wildcat strikes in the mining sector to push South Africa to a “crisis point”.He warned against a culture of violence during strikes. Several people were reportedly killed this week as a two-week long mass action by truck drivers intensified. Doctors in Cape Town were forced to switch off life support of a man who suffered brain damage after being hit by a rock while driving in a truck.“Violence should be condemned. We have mechanisms that allow people to engage on labour issues … Some of those trucks that were torched and destroyed actually belonged to small business,” Zuma said. The President acknowledged that the protracted industrial action in mining had delivered a hard blow to South Africa’s economy. The Treasury has put the estimated total rand production lost as a result of the strikes in platinum and gold mining sectors at R4.5-billion. Up to R118-million was lost in coal. But despite the figures, Zuma said investor confidence in South Africa remained unaffected.“Our economic data does not indicate a significant drop in business confidence yet since the strike and the global economic decline, but our responsibility is to ensure that we do not reach a crisis point.”‘Right to strike does not override other rights’Meanwhile, the Cabinet has also expressed concern over the recent spate of lawlessness, violence and intimidation that it says has continued to mar the democratic right of workers to strike.“It is a fact that as a democracy, the right to strike is a defined right in South Africa that obligates the strikers to observe that they cannot encroach on other people’s rights as they enjoy theirs,” Acting Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Richard Baloyi said at a post-Cabinet briefing in Pretoria on Thursday. The Cabinet warned that violence and lawlessness would not be tolerated.“No one should be intimidated to take or not take and industrial action in a democracy,” the minister said, adding that no one should resort to any form of violence against people or property as a form of striking or protest.Baloyi said existing channels had to be used and that the law had to prevail, adding that the struggle for freedom and democracy ensured that the laws provided space for protected peaceful strikes. He called on the striking workers to use existing channels with unions to address grievances and wage negotiations in a manner that was within the law.“It is, among others, these illegal strike actions and the accompanying violence that is not helping the country’s image internationally and is contributing to the already existing challenges facing our economy and society,” Baloyi said.Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

What’s Behind The Public Shaming of Reddit’s King Troll Violentacrez?

first_imgfruzsina eordogh A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit When Gawker reporter Adrian Chen publicly outed troll and influential Reddit user Violentacrez as Michael Brutsch two weeks ago in what many are calling the “best story of the Web,” he changed the nature of the Internet forever. The resulting journalist-sanctioned public shaming:1. Highlighted how ignorant the media is of Internet culture.2. Forced the Internet’s core psyche, sometimes referred to as the “hive mind,” to mature from a teenage boy to a relatively respectful young adult almost overnight.3. Legitimized digital lynch mobs. The Seduction Of A Public ShamingOur technology may have evolved, but our attitudes have not: Nothing pleases humanity more than a good public shaming. Instead of pelting rotten tomatoes at a man locked in the town square stockade, society’s “sinners” are now paraded on national television, courtesy of Anderson Cooper, and branded with a scarlet “T.” (Just Google “Michael Brutsch” if you don’t know what I mean.)Brutsch is now the physical face of the most hated thing on the Internet: the Troll. That anonymous person who goes out of his way to provoke a response. While few people understand what trolls actually are, where they came from and why they do what they do, it is generally accepted that they are the scum of the Web. Hating on them unconditionally is not just acceptable, it’s encouraged, as Cooper implied by calling Brutsch a sad “little person,” sitting “alone in his room, typing on his keyboard, interacting with people he doesn’t even know.” Cooper did stop short of calling him a “neckbeard,” but other outlets have not –  he’s been called a “monster,” and even falsely tied to the suicide of Amanda Todd and the “capper” community. Brutsch didn’t create the act of trolling, nor was he the original or most notorious troll. (Brutsch might not even be a troll, as tech culture journalist Xeni Jardin pointed out.) Nor is Brutsch the first man to have an offensive porn collection, or the first man to sexualize children. Regardless, Brutsch will be made an example of, dammit, because we the media (or as Forbes Kashmir Hill called it, “The Internet Cool Kids”) are sick and tired of these vile human beings mucking up our Internet! Never mind that the same media leverages these same transgressors to drive pageviews – all cloaked in hand-wringing and faux outrage (an act Reddit itself is guilty of) . And, of course, the same said media also sexualizes children.   Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification Related Posts Tags:#Trolls center_img The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Trolls Are Easy TargetsCalling Brutsch’s transgressions “vile” isn’t an overstatement – his stuff was downright disgusting. Brutsch had his hands in some of the most controversial subreddits, including /r/incest, /r/misogyny, /r/beatingwomen, /r/chokeabitch, /r/Jewmerica, /r/Jailbait, /r/niggerjailbait, /r/rapebait, /r/picsofdeadkids and /r/creepshots, just to name a few. If you are offended by those titles, that’s the point of a Troll: Brutsch’s online behavior is so offensive that anyone that wants to be considered a respectable member of society has no choice but to oppose his behavior. As Chen describes trolling in his unmasking piece: “A troll exploits social dynamics like computer hackers exploit security loopholes, and Violentacrez calmly exploited the Reddit hive mind’s powerful outrage machine and free speech values at the same time.” If “troll” wasn’t the hot button word of the year, we’d be calling Brutsch’s digital binders of scantily clad or beaten women “performance art.”Whitney Phillips, a scholar studying Internet trolling culture, put it another way, calling trolls “cultural scavengers” that “engage in a process I describe as cultural digestion: They take in, regurgitate, and subsequently weaponize existing tropes and cultural sensitivities.” Trolls don’t engage in this sort of behavior alone or in a vacuum, Phillips said. Rather, they come out to play when they have a supportive “host culture.”  AKA: Reddit.Enabling Adolescent BehaviorThis is exactly what Brutsch meant when he told CNN’s Drew Griffin that Reddit “enabled” and “encouraged” his online behavior: “When two years ago, when all of this was at its height, the audience was appreciative, and supportive of the sort of gallows humor that I put out there.” When Brutsch, who is one year shy of 50, said he was catering to an audience of college kids, he means this both literally and figuratively. Brutsch’s fanbase isn’t necessarily college-aged, but the core Internet psyche is.Established sometime between late 1993 and 1999 through sites like Usenet and WebCrawler, and then reborn in 2003 with the creation of 4chan, the Internet psyche is skeptical, self-absorbed, sadistic and lazy – except when it comes to porn, cute animals, digital pranks and acts of Internet vigilantism. For various reasons, perhaps elated to being wealthy, white and privileged, users connected to this hive mind regularly post the most disturbing (re: misogynist, racist) content they can find. You might see this behavior as a way to compensate for, and feel alive in, their mundane real-world existences.    The infamous Usenet troll Ted Frank told Stryker in an interview for his book Epic Win For Anonymous: How 4chan’s Army Conquered The Web, that trolling served as “an educational tool for newcomers.” Modern trolling culture has evolved from its roots on Usenet, however, and Frank “insists” the trolling similarities between 4chan and Usenet are “an etymological coincidence.”  (In fact, the notion of trolling can be traced back even further than Usenet: Stryker describes comedian Andy Kaufman as one of the finest examples of a “pre-Internet troll,” and draws parallels with the “Greek prankster Pan, the Norse god Loki, and the conniving Native American Coyote.”)As the Internet goes mainstream and effectively kills the mantra “there are no girls on the Internet,” older generations, women and traditional media increasingly bump into this hive mind. Their presence will age and mature the digitial pysche just by being there, is the hope.  Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… The 4Chan ConnectionMuch of Reddit’s young, trolling psyche comes from 4chan, specifically /b/, but 4chan has managed to stay out of headlines during this flame war. “I don’t understand why everyone was upset at jailbait, while 4chan continually posts bullshit across the internet and no one bats an eye,” wrote redditor he_cried_out_WTF in response to the Violentacrez controversy. “4chan is apparently the petulant child that everyone pretends doesn’t exist as it throws yet another vase on the floor.”Reddit (and 4chan) aren’t the only social news sites that regularly tap into the vase-throwing Internet psyche: Digg, 9gag, Fark, Something Awful, Encyclopedia Dramatica, Buzzfeed, The Daily Dot, Know Your Meme and the entire I Can Haz Cheezburger clan regularly regularly tune in. Even Erik Martin and fellow paid Reddit employees were guilty of listening to this psyche when they cried “free speech” and “privacy” as knee-jerk reactions, when they could have denounced the misogynistic and racist behavior Brutsch catered to.  Brutsch gave the community exactly what it wanted. In return, he heaped up “meaningless Internet points… It had a reward, like the monkey that pushes the button to get a food pellet, it’s addictive” said Brutsch on national television. “Why do people spend money playing [World of Warcraft], why do people play games like that to build up their meaningless stats?, [it’s] exactly the same as 800,000 karma on Reddit.”  Gamification, baby.Where Do The Rest Of Us Fit In?Our reaction, as both journalists and “respectable members of society” prove we’re not that different from Brutsch and the dark side of the Internet. We behaved trollishly when we celebrated his job loss, demanded he be imprisoned or burn in hell, and gleefully discussed how his life is now ruined forever. Our collective outrage – what trolls eat for breakfast – also earned us meaningless Internet points in the form of Facebook likes and Twitter RTs. Chen’s piece made White Knights of us all, but is that enough to fix all the societal ills Brutsch was pointing out with his “trolling?” And is a digital lynching really the way to go? We don’t accept this kind of treatment of criminals in the real world – our current justice system is not ruled by a mob mentality  – but Chen’s piece and the resulting digital lynching is generally viewed as an acceptable means of punishment online. Perhaps, though, the most ironic aspect of this journalist-sanctioned public trial and execution, is that it generated from well-known Reddit “trolls” themselves. last_img read more

VVIP chopper scam: ED summons M.P. CM’s nephew

first_imgThe Enforcement Directorate informed a Delhi court on Wednesday that it has summoned Ratul Puri, nephew of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, for interrogation in a money laundering case related to the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam. ED told Special Judge Arvind Kumar that Mr. Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Powerprojects Pvt Ltd, was summoned for confronting him with Sushen Mohan Gupta, an arrested middleman in the case, whose custodial interrogation was on Wednesday extended by three more days by the court. Seeking the extension of Mr. Gupta’s custody, ED told the court that he was required to be confronted with various people including Mr. Puri in the case pertaining to the now scrapped ₹3,600 crore chopper deal. Mr. Puri, who was summoned to join the probe on Wednesday, denied having “any connection or involvement of any kind in defence or the case”.In a statement, his company said: “He would be fully cooperating with the ED investigation and provide any clarification or information as may be required.” Middleman’s statementAccording to ED sources, Mr. Puri’s name appeared in the statement recorded by middleman and Dubai-based businessman Rajeev Saxena, who recently turned approver in the case. ED’s special public prosecutors D.P. Singh and N.K. Matta also told the court that the agency wanted to identify one “RG”, in whose name entries of over ₹50 crore were made in Mr. Gupta’s diaries.“The custodial interrogation of Gupta is required as he is misguiding the probe by deliberately giving wrong explanation of abbreviations in his diaries wherein abbreviation ‘RG’ finds mention in many pages as well as pen drive data.“More than ₹50 crore shown to have been received from ‘RG’ between 2004 to 2016, whereas the ‘RG’ identified by Mr. Gupta, i.e., Rajat Gupta, had admitted to have cash transactions with Sushen from 2007 onwards and the same are being quantified,” the agency told the court. The agency submitted that Sushen said he only knew one ‘RG’ who was Rajat Gupta, whereas Rajat denied the transactions made in the name of RG and said he not the person being referred to.last_img read more

Dravid backs Tendulkar suggestion on new ODI format

first_imgIt might have been rejected by the ICC but Sachin Tendulkar’s suggestion to revamp the ODIs by splitting the format into four innings of 25 overs each has got the backing of his Test teammate Rahul Dravid.”It is interesting (suggestion). I don’t know why the ICC has rejected it (Tendulkar’s suggestion via a letter to ICC), but it’s a good idea that Sachin has given and is worth experimenting,” said India’s batting mainstay on the England tour on the sidelines of a promotional event for ‘Gillette’ here last night.”It has been tried out in Australia (in domestic cricket) and the plus and minus points should be looked into,” he added.Tendulkar had written a letter to the ICC to change the format of the ODIs from two innings of 50 overs to four of 25 overs like a Test match but the world council’s Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat had rejected it.”There is no need to change the format,” Lorgat told reporters in Colombo on Wednesday.”We did receive a written proposal from Sachin, but that was a long time back. I myself have spoken to him many times about it, the last one as recent as during the World Cup in April. The success of the tournament showed that the 50-over format was sound in health and there was no need for dramatic changes,” Lorgat added.”The executive board meeting after the World Cup decided that the present format was doing well. That has not changed,” Lorgat stressed.Tendulkar had argued that four innings of 25 overs would be a fair way to balance the advantage gained by the team which won the toss in conditions such as bad weather, sub-quality pitches which historically had proven that a match can virtually be decided by the toss of a coin.advertisementDravid also backed the Cricket Board for deciding to put pressure on the ICC for revising the controversial Decision Review System of which he got the rough end of the stick in the Test and ODI rubbers in England.”It’s not set in stone. Anything connected with DRS is a work in progress. There are new challenges and questioned about it. Its up to the member boards (of the ICC) to ask whether things are better with it in place,” said the 39-year-old Dravid.Dravid, who was the lone batsman to show consistently superb form in difficult conditions against a top class England pace attack in the four-match Test rubber that India lost 0-4, was also controversially given out through the ‘Hot Spot’ image system on at least three occasions leading to big debates over DRS.last_img read more

Sony MDR-XB650BT review: One of the best headphones under Rs 10,000

first_imgSony may have seen its fortunes dwindle in the smartphone market, but in the video and audio market it is still a force to reckon with. Despite facing a tough market, which is extremely price sensitive, Sony’s Extra Bass range of headphones have found takers in India. The heavy bass goes well with pop songs and Bollywood music, something that Indians love. Sony already sells five headphones, ranging from Rs 1,490 to Rs 12,990, in its “extra bass” series. Now it is adding sixth. Called MDR-XB650BT, this new headphone has a price of Rs 7,990 and supports Bluetooth technology. It is also, we feel, one of the best headphones to buy under Rs 10,000. Design and build qualitySony is good with designs. But once the company settles on a particular, it refrains from changing it for as long as possible. It did the same with the Xperia phones. And now it seems to be doing it with the headphones. Almost all of Sony’s XB series headphones look same. Only the build quality and the material changes, depending on the price of the headphone. The MDR-XB650BT looks more or less similar to the wired headphones priced around Rs 2,000. It also has the similar metal-finish design, covering most of the surface including the earpads. But unlike the cheaper headphones, this one has a metal headband. This band is thin and flexible. It makes the headphones light and comfortable to wear for long hours. The headphone sports cushioned earpads that are soft. They also snugly fit around the ears, although a little too snugly, in a bid to provide passive noise control. While this design does keep the ambient voice out of your ears when you are listening to music, it also makes ears sweaty after a couple of hours of use. But then headphones that can keep the ears cool even after hours of use, especially in the hot weather of Delhi, are rare. advertisementThe headphones sit firmly over head and they are neither loose nor tight. You can wear them for hours and you won’t feel the headband digging into your skull and clamping force around ears. The MDR-XB650BT houses all the controls on the right earpad. These buttons control power and volume. There is also a button that toggles between music and calls. The placement of controls may feel awkward if you are new to Bluetooth headphones, but it’s not something you can’t get used to. The headphones also support NFC, which comes handy when you want to connect your phone quickly to it.The headphones are available in red, blue, and black colours. The overall design is good for the purpose but can be termed boring. To make it short and simple, the headphones won’t wow anyone in your office while you use at work. PerformanceWhen you read “Extra Bass” written over a headphone box, it is easy to assume it will overpower your senses with loaded bass. But in this case the preconceived notion turns out to be wrong. As we noted in our review of MDR-XB950BT, Sony is delivering good bass with balanced treble in the Extra Bass headphones. After trying the latest headphones through the ups and downs of music, we feel it is even better than its costlier predecessor. When we talk about good bass, we talk about the kind of deep “thump” that doesn’t kill the music. The MDR-XB650BT is a headphone that offers extra bass but along with the overall clarity of music and vocals. The result is that the XB650BT will please not only those who want fun sound from their headphones but also those who have more attuned ears. Although, it is not going to please audiophiles who love the mostly neutral sound of Audio-Technica M50, it offers more engaging and more enjoyable sound in this price range. It is rare to find headphones or other audio devices that can balance each and every subtle aspect of music. But the XB650BT does. The Bose SoundLink II is one other such product but that one is priced at Rs 21,000. We tried the XB650BT with wide range of music, from metal, rock, EDM, hip-hop, classical, to Indian classics and the good ol’ beat-heavy 90s music. The headphones never, not even once, delivered an output that we would call poor. Some users may get mixed feelings about the way these headphones handle metal. But it manages a sufficiently good audio quality, meaning there is no unnecessary noise, no voice cracking, and it does a good job with lower notes during metal riffs.advertisementWhen it comes to old Hindi songs and classical or Carnatic music, the MDR-XB650BT holds the ground well and firmly. It doesn’t colour the old feel of that sort of music, which is lovely. The sound quality is clean and beats are clear with almost all the genres we tried. The MDR-XB650BT maintains the extra bass wherever required. Surprisingly, we never found the bass part overdone. Unlike the Bose SoundLink II, the Sony headphones are loud. And interestingly, even at the highest volume, we didn’t find any noticeable drop in the audio quality. The company claims the headphones can last about 30 hours on a full charge. We got slightly less during our usage but overall it can be considered good. Once charged, we found that the headphones work for over 24 hours or in other words a couple of days before you will have to charge them. We also received calls with the these headphones. We found the voice quality sufficiently good although in case of poor network, the volume was on the lower side. The MDR-XB650BT headphones deliver something that most Bluetooth headphones either fail to deliver or deliver with flaws. The headphones are also perfect, especially for the price.Should you buy itYes. If you are looking to spend Rs 7,990 on a headphone, this is what we recommend. These are all-rounders and a total value for money. Yes, the design is somewhat boring but the good sound quality more than make up for it. And that is all that matters when it comes to headphones.last_img read more

Antetokounmpo Praises Kidd, Says He Loves, Cares about Him as a Person

first_imgMILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo grew from a reed-thin, inexperienced teenager into one of the NBA’s dominant players under the tutelage of coach Jason Kidd, whom the Milwaukee Bucks fired earlier in the week with the team mired in mediocrity despite high expectations.Kidd’s abrupt and surprising dismissal Monday has taken an emotional toll on the All-Star forward, affectionately known as the “Greek Freak.”“He’s a big part of my success in the league,” Antetokounmpo said after Wednesday’s practice in his first public comments since the coaching change. “I’m loyal to the people I work with. I love him as a person. I care about him as a person.”Informed by Bucks’ management of the planned firing even before Kidd learned his fate, Antetokounmpo called his soon-to-be ex-coach to break the news.“It was one of the toughest calls I had to make,” he said. “We are going to miss him.”Joe Prunty, a member of Kidd’s staff, has been named interim coach for the remainder of the season. He directed the team to a 109-105 win over Phoenix on Monday, just hours after taking over the team.Kidd became Milwaukee’s coach a few months after a group led by co-owners Wes Edens and Mark Lasry bought the team in April 2014. The Bucks traded two future second-round draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets, where Kidd had been coach, as compensation. He inherited a team that won 15 games in 2013-14. Under Kidd, the Bucks had a regular-season record of 139-152.Milwaukee is 9-12 since going a season-high five games over .500 on Dec. 9.Asked whether he believed Kidd should have been fired, Antetokounmpo, who reportedly offered to go to the team’s owners to try to save Kidd’s job, said: “It’s in the front office’s hands. Whatever they can do to make this team a championship level team, it can happen. If it’s me being traded, or the coach being fired.”Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd talks with Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo as he walks off the court during the first quarter of an NBA basketball game against the Sacramento Kings Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, in Sacramento, Calif. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli)Kidd is the second coach to be fired since the Bucks selected Antetokounmpo with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 draft. Antetokounpmo played one season under Larry Drew, who was dismissed in June 2014.“I was only 18,” Antetokoummpo said. “I didn’t even know how the NBA worked. (Kidd’s firing) hurts a little bit more because he was here for 3 1/2 years. He trusted me. He put the ball in my hands. He pushed me to be great.”Antetokounmpo is expected to return to action when the Bucks take on Brooklyn in Milwaukee on Friday. He sat out the past two games as he continues to manage chronic pain in his right knee.“I feel great. I’m ready to go,” he said. “I feel energized.”Prunty said his players “gave good energy” in the first full practice since he took the reins.“These are a tough few days,” Prunty said. “We need to focus on whether we are getting better.”The Bucks have said that Prunty will be considered for the permanent job after the season. The hire will be especially crucial as the Bucks prepare to move into a new arena.“It’s hard to talk about that aspect of it right now,” Prunty said. “This isn’t about me, especially under these circumstances.”Malcolm Brogdon, last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year, praised Prunty’s positive demeanor.“In times of struggle, we tend to pout and take our foot off the gas. We can’t do that,” Brogdon said. “He’s a good coach to have when we are going through those struggles.”—RICH ROVITO, Associated PressTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more
